There I was perched in front of my laptop answering comments, and saw it. I was so pleasantly surprised, humbled and honored. I had to reread it a second time to make sure I was seeing right.
I have been chosen to receive the blogger recognition award nomination? For my little ole blog?
I felt like I must be doing something right. I must be headed in the right direction with the effort that I put in as far as working toward making this blog a success.
I want to say I humbly appreciate all the readers who have found an interest in all the content I have created thus far. It’s not much but more is sure to come. 🙂
But, before continuing I have to graciously give a huge thank you to Heather and Lisa, owners of the blog Made in a Pinch, for nominating me.
Over at Made in a Pinch, Lisa and Heather have a wonderful “conquer your clutter super bundle” that helps with simplifying and organizing your life. Their blog focuses on DIY ideas, family, food and a unique way of maintaining a close friendship. You can also find their acceptance of the award here.
Blogger Recognition Award Defined:
The blogger recognition award is an award that is given to bloggers for the hard work they put into their blogs. The way it works is by having other bloggers, whom have been previously nominated, seek out and nominate new bloggers. As part of the nomination each nominee must nominate up to 15 additional bloggers for the award.
Why Did I Start Blogging?
“I’m on Facebook and watch videos on YouTube. A lot of my friends blog but, I’m not into that.” These were the words of my co-worker when Facebook first came on the scene as I sat across from him in our square by square cubicles. I thought to myself, I wanna blog.
That would be amazing to have my own space to write and express myself without the confines of a middleman deciding what will and won’t get published. I would get to put my own words online and connect with readers.
But, I had no idea how to start and figured I didn’t have the time to start such a thing being a busy single mom and all.
At that point in my life I only knew about blogging as a hobby and didn’t have the time to spend that type of energy on a hobby when bills had to be paid.
A few years later I was googling some research about freelance writing and stumbled upon information about mom bloggers. I had no idea these existed. And niche blogging…what was that?
These moms talked about how they were able to make a living blogging. I was stoked! This was amazing to me because all I ever wanted to do was write for a living and here was my opportunity to do exactly this by having a blog.
From my understanding the key was to pick a niche if you wanted to be a professional blogger verses having a blog as a hobby. I decided on personal finance because of my background in banking. Friends and family always seemed to come to me with financial questions and I somehow have been able to help.
This is what I want to do for others. I want to help those who struggle with understanding how finances work. I want to offer advice on how to get out of debt and boost your credit score.
The true journey began when I started…
I found an affordable online course to learn blogging because I knew nothing. And this is what I learned: It’s a lot of work!
But, work I knew I had a passion for.
There are so many challenges along the way. For example, it took me awhile to get the concept of how to write a simple blog post. I was so accustomed to writing newspaper and magazine articles (I have a background in freelance journalism). Then, I had my ups and downs with the technical side of things. That took a while to figure out too.
But, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love blogging. I enjoy connecting with readers and other bloggers. I want to help educate and entertain my readers by shining a little light on how the financial world works.
It’s a passion of mine to help others do better in their lives. Because, for a long time I wasn’t doing well in mine and no one should be deprived of happiness.
My Two Pieces of Advice For Brand New Bloggers
FIRST
The technical side of things can be a doozy if you’re not a techy. So, I advise to start working on your website as early as possible—not a few weeks before you plan to launch. Unless you’ve done this before and are familiar with WordPress, themes, plugins and all the other techy stuff, I suggest you check out a few tutorials. Also have at least 5 post ready to publish for launch day.
SECOND
Don’t break the bank paying out of pocket. Don’t go into debt signing up for every course you see for social media training, plug-ins, website designs and all the other necessaries to run and market a blog.
There’s plenty of free info out there.
If you do plan to spend set a price you refuse to go over and stick to it. Don’t forget to save all your receipts for tax purposes, if you plan to blog as a business.

Right now it sounds like Movable Type is the preferred blogging platform
available right now. (from what I’ve read) Is that what you’re using on your blog?
